Why we test the people selling websites
Every agency in Berkshire makes the same promises: fast, professional, found on Google. Almost none publish prices, so you can't compare on cost. But you can compare the one thing Google measures on every website with the same ruler: whether their own site passes the test they'll be selling you. This is the second report in our county series (Oxfordshire · Buckinghamshire), and the pattern from Oxfordshire held: most of the industry fails its own exam.
What we found in Berkshire
- The average agency scores 66/100 on its own homepage. 16 of 19 sit below Google's "good" band.
- The slowest site took 37.2 seconds to show its first view on a phone (Advansys). On mobile, most visitors are gone by second three.
- The heaviest homepage weighs 10.4 MB (Pixel Beach), downloaded before a visitor reads a word.
- Top of the table: Red Balloon at 96/100 with a 2.6s first view. Credit where due.
- 14 of 19 take over 3 seconds to first view on a normal 4G connection, the point where abandonment climbs steeply.
The pattern, same as everywhere
This isn't 19 separate failures. The industry-standard build is a WordPress theme plus a page builder plus plugins, and every layer adds weight the customer's phone must download before anything appears. The fast sites in this table are lean; the slow ones haul multiple megabytes of homepage. Speed isn't bought with budget, it's kept by restraint. None of this means these are bad designers, and speed isn't everything. But it's the one claim on every agency homepage that a customer can check in five minutes, free.

Methodology, and the open offer
We tested each agency's public homepage with Google Lighthouse 12.8.2 (the engine behind PageSpeed Insights) on standard mobile settings: emulated mid-range phone, throttled 4G. Single run per site on 9 July 2026. Scores fluctuate a few points between runs; nothing here hinges on that margin. Agencies were selected by appearing in organic search results for Berkshire web design queries (Reading, Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough, Newbury and county-wide terms) in July 2026. Pixel Heaven is included as the out-of-county benchmark and we publish our score, good or bad, same as everyone. Data is CC-BY: use it with a link back.
To any agency listed: improve your score, email james@pixelheaven.org, and we'll re-test and update your row with a note, free, no snark. We re-run every county annually.
The test we run on ourselves is the test we sell.
Every Pixel Heaven site must score 90+ on this exact test before a client takes the keys. Builds start at £100 with a free preview first. And now you know the question to ask anyone quoting you in Berkshire: "what does your own website score?"
